In U.S. District Court on Friday (October 24th), Glenn D. Shriver admitted to accepting $70,000 from Chinese spies while attempting to obtain jobs with the CIA and U.S. Foreign Service. The 28 year-old, from Grand Rapids, Mich., confessed to looking for these jobs in order to get classified information to sell to Beijing.

Court documents stated that while Shriver was living in Shanghai  in 2004 after earlier study trips to China, he was approached by Chinese officers. After Shriver answered an English Speaking ad, Chinese officers recruited him and got him to look for U.S. Government jobs that would allow him access to classified and secret documents.

Shriver plead guilty to a single count of  “conspiring to provide national defense information to Chinese intelligence officers.”

A DoD task force is assessing the possible damage that may be caused by the expected leak of approximately 400,000 classified significant activity reports from Iraq operations.  According to the Geoff Morrell, the Pentagon Press Secretary, the activity reports are “essentially snapshots of events, both tragic and mundane, and do not tell the whole story”; additionally, Marine Corps.  Col. Dave Lapan says,  “The problem with WikiLeaks is it goes beyond just taking out names of people, there is lots of other information that could be damaging, and they don’t have the expertise to know what they are.”

As a recipient of  GI Bill benefits , I was fortunate enough to get a paid (mostly anyway) education courtesy of my Uncle Sam.  The GI Bill has changed several times since I separated, with the latest changes happening post 9/11.  One of the biggest (and best) changes is the ability to transfer your benefits to your dependents.  I wish I could do this now!  Read the full story at the defense.gov web site and as a veteran, you should visit the Department of Veterans Affairs site often.  Know your Veterans benefits.  It wasn’t until my sophomore year that my buddy told me he was attending Columbia University at no cost.  I kicked myself.

PAWTUXET RANGERS 236th BIRTHDAY PARTY

American Revolution History Military News Patriots

A reminder that the Pawtuxet Rangers will be having their 236th birthday party on October 27 in East Greenwich, Rhode Island.  If you plan on attending, please make your reservations.  Details of the event are below.  Who they are from their web site.

The Pawtuxet Rangers were chartered in 1774 to protect the thriving seaport of Pawtuxet, and at various times throughout the Revolutionary War manned the fort on Pawtuxet Neck, a function vital to the defense of both Pawtuxet and Providence. As the war progressed, the Rangers were called upon to participate in major engagements in other areas including the Battle of Rhode Island and the Battle of Saratoga.

Today, the Pawtuxet Rangers are among the oldest existing chartered commands in the country. Under the overall command of the Governor as Captain General, and the direct command of the Adjutant General of the Rhode Island National Guard, the Rangers still retain the independent status of their charter while also available on a voluntary basis to assist in certain State functions if so requested.

The Pawtuxet Rangers are among the most active of Rhode Island’s militia groups. They are constantly sought for participation in a wide variety of parades and public appearances, including ceremonial State functions, battle reenactments, and speaking engagements.
