NOTE: This course includes a field exercise that will require a hiking in the woods at distance over rough terrain.
WHEN: 20 December 2025 (Saturday), Muster time 0715hrs. Expected end time 1600hrs.
WHERE: CLASSROOM – Muster at 50 Circle Road, Stony Brook, NY; FIELD EXERCISE – 484 Randall Road, Ridge, NY
UOD: OCP with cold/wet weather gear (ECWCS Level II/III/VI); AR 670-1 grooming standards apply and will be enforced. IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, that you follow the weather forecast and prepare accordingly. See additional note below.
FOOD/SUPPLIES: Bring a notebook, pen, hydration, and nourishment. Breakfast will be on the individual SM before Class. Lunch will be held after the initial exam. Lunch, also on the individual, is available at many locations close to the class venue. Field Exercise immediately following lunch.

MORE DETAILS: Developed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the Basic Wildland Search Skills course teaches the most basic skills needed to conduct search in the wildland environment. Topics covered in this course include basic search organization (Incident Command System), communications, search techniques, attitude, and safety. This course concludes with a field exercise that will require a hiking in the woods at distance over rough terrain to practice the techniques discussed in the classroom. Bring a notebook, pen, hydration, and nourishment.
COURSE COST: None
ADDITIONAL NOTE: Temps over 40 Degrees raises the possibility of Ticks in the woods , spray may be suggested. Bring Eye Protection for the woods, Kevlar (if you have it) for head protection from Widow Makers may be suggested but not necessary. Gloves are also suggested.
